Let it snow….

It started snowing in Manali yesterday and there has been no let up since. There is two feet of snow on the ground and the sky is still bucketing snow. Roads are closed, the electricity is off, water might freeze, but wonder of wonders … we still have internet!

We discharged  quite a few of the patients and all our staff had a spirited snowball fight in the courtyard. Dr. Sarah was judged Snow warrior of the year.

Happy New Year

We wish all our readers and supporters a Blessed New Year.

The watershed divide of New Years eve is often spent in chasing balloons, paper, or drinks, and with frantic fun making that crescendoes in cadence with the progress of the clock with the magical midnight transition from the old to the new.

It can also be a time for introspection and review, and a thoughtful preparation for the year to come.

At Manali, we stand at the threshold of the New year with many dreams, ideas and plans for developement and change. We have optimism for these plans, yet a fear of stepping out in faith where we do not see the resources for them as yet. Yet, that is what faith is about, where we rely on Him who engineered this transition of time so hailed by the world anyway as New Years eve.

May all your plans also come under this same banner of provision, knowing that even if a ball drops in Times Square, the ball will not drop in the course of our new year in 2013.

With wishes to all.

Farewell to Sister Victoria, Mr. Charles and Dr. Swati

As the New Year rings in, we bid farewell to Sister Victoria, our Nursing Superintendent and Mr. Charles Benjamin, our Office Adminstrator. They have been with us for four years, bringing their expertise to their respective areas. Sister Victoria really enhanced the nursing skills of our staff and maintained a high nursing standard. Mr. Charles took charge of the office administrative work and handled much of the correspondence, organisation and communication. They will  be deeply missed.

Dr. Swati Choudhary has been with us for the past two years and now having finished her service obligation moves on to work at obtaining a postgraduate course seat. We wish her well.

Demise of Dr. D.S. Virk

We sadly announce the demise of Dr. D.S. Virk, plastic surgeon who had joined us here last year and left us on health grounds  in October 2012. He passed away on 17th December 2012.

Dr. Virk had done his Masters in Surgery from CMC  Ludhiana, and his plastic surgery M. Ch. from PGI Chandigarh, had joined the government service and had retired as the Director Health Services Punjab. After his retirement he came to be with us in Manali and endeared himself to one and all with his gentle humble ways. He was an excellent surgeon and brought his advanced training and skills to the people of Manali.

He had developed some health problems that prohibited him from continuing here and he had spent the rest of the months at home in Nawashahar. He succumbed to a sudden heart attack and passed away on the 16th. He is succeeded by three daughters. Our deepest condolences to the family. He will always be remembered here in Manali.

Winter leave starts

Winter leave has started in Manali. Half the staff have left for their annual leave. The old ward has shut and the icu moved to the post natal side. Snow is on the ground. Tandoors have emerged from the store and are now sending smoke trails to the winter sky. We are snuggling in for a long winter. Our winter wishes and greetings of the season to all

Above and beyond the call of duty

Mr. J was a Dutch national who sustained an intracranial bleed four months ago. He was transferred to a tertiary care centre, where he was on a ventilator with a tracheostomy and ng feeding. He was transferred back to us two and a half months ago. He had no one else with him other than some friends from Manali. He is paralysed on one side and has limited communication capabilities. He stayed with us and slowly recovered.

After much communication with the embassy and his insurance company, we eventually worked out a “Plan Amsterdam”. His insurance would not cover the evacuation, so with much negotiation, we dialogued with the KLM airlines, Dutch embassy, nursing home in Amsterdam, and the local authorities (his visa was about to expire). Eventually a plan was hatched for his transport by commercial aircraft to Amsterdam, accompanied by one of our staff. Despite some glitches on the way, (he aspirated pizza the day prior to an earlier departure) he is now safely on the way back home. We are very grateful to Dr. Madeline Pikaar, who providentially happened to be here at this time and was the key negotiator.

This was indeed a transfer above and beyond the call of duty.
