Camps
When do you conduct your medical camps?
The schedule of our medical camps
can be accessed on our Event page and by following the calendar.
I am a volunteer and would like to attend your medical camps. How do I apply?
You could apply by letting us know your qualifications and interest on the volunteer
page and detailing the time frame you are interested in to volunteer. If found
appropriate, our human resource department will get back to you with details on how
you can be a part of the camp.
Is there a charge for accompanying a medical camp?
No. Once accepted as
medical volunteer and paying the charges that apply to volunteering, which can be
found on the volunteer page, there is no additional charge to go on medical camps.
What do I need to be careful of when accompanying a medical camp?
- You need to turn up for the camp on time. Departure times are often early in the morning, and if you are not there on time, the team will probably leave without you. Find out departure times the day prior and make sure that there is space in the vehicle for you. Sometimes, required staff numbers increase on a trip, which may mean you could get bumped off from a trip. This is usually coordinated through Ms. Deepa or the admin office.
- You need to carry a water bottle and be appropriately dressed. This may mean a jacket and warm wear during winter.
- You will need to bring your stethoscope and a pen. If you feel the need to sterilize your hands frequently, please do bring your own solutions. We have spirit available in the camps.
Will lunch be provided on day camps?
Yes, lunch is usually cooked fresh and
provided for the team for all camps. Camps that require you to stay overnight will
provide all three meals.
What about camps to distant locations? Will we be provided a place to sleep?
Yes. You will be provided a place to sleep for all camps that run more than a day. Please bring your personal toiletries with you inclusive of toilet paper. A sleeping bag will be very useful for these camps, but if you don’t have one, don’t sweat because sheets and blankets will be provided.
What is the schedule for distant remote camps?
There will be a Camp Director who
will provide the camp schedule for each camp. Usually breakfast will follow a brief
devotion and a camp briefing following which the camp will break up into different
work locations. Debriefing will happen at the end of the day prior to dinner. Lights out
time will be determined until which time socialization, games and relaxation is
encouraged. Alcohol and smoking are strictly prohibited at all camps.
What happens if I feel unwell during a camp?
Please inform the Medical Doctor in
charge at the first sign of illness so that you can be treated timely and appropriately.
Can I get altitude sickness while on a camp?
Yes, team members are also
susceptible to altitude sickness. The team doctor will brief you about early symptoms
and require you to inform him at the first suspicious sign. The team doctor will treat
you appropriately and ensure your safety provided you let him or her know in a timely
fashion. You can go through our u tube video on the condition here.
Do we have mobile phone coverage on our camps?
Yes with advancing mobile
phone coverage, all the locations we go to now have mobile phone coverage, though
internet coverage is not reliable. You will need a mobile phone registered in India
which will have to be obtained from Manali prior to departure.
Do you have western toilets on your camps?
Though access to a Western style toilet
is usually available, there is no guarantee of it, and an Indian style toilet may be the
norm in the camps.
